Hair to spare!!!

Introduction: When you are a five year old little girl you do not really understand that certain people, songs, or movies might actually make a small or sometimes major impact in your life. In fact, it is not really until you are an adult that you can see where that idea, color, or style choice might actually come from…where did “it” originate from? You were influenced without even knowing that you would be! You just knew that you loved watching “It”, hearing “It”, singing “It”! You never realized you would implement “It”!

The older I get and the more I evolve, the more my tastes are not only defined by what is trendy and in style, but by the things I loved in my youth and adore as an adult. I see how they influence my style and musical choices! I understand more now who I am and what I like, and really begin to care less about what others define as cool and stylish! I define those things, because I have better defined who I am as a woman, a wife, a mother, a boutique owner, and designer. Clothing and style have never been more about the love of individuality as it is now, and that is extremely exciting and invigorating!

In these next few articles that I will be writing as part of Rockin’ Queen, inc.’s bi-weekly fashion posts, I will be highlighting movies that have influenced me and my personal style! If you walk into our boutique, their presence is easily seen. In fact, many of the style trends we see today can be traced back to these specific flicks (although I am sure it is not through their influence alone that we see these trends reemerge)…how funny the way that works! I hope you enjoy this series of short essay as much as I enjoy writing them (I am already giddy and full of nostalgia)!

The Legend of Billie Jean…Hair is Hair!
Written by: Lizette Trujillo

The Legend of Billie Jean was released in 1985 and had little box office success (probably because of its feminist main character, Billie Jean Davy). Now I am not saying that this is an Oscar worthy film, by any means! It is a teen flick from the 80’s, but its style relevance and its short haired female empowerment versus long haired vixen resonates in today’s style culture. In fact, in an article in June’s ELLE the short cut (although considered chic in fashionable circles) was said to be unappealing to men because it was seen as “unwillingness to conform to the norm”. How can this be? Isn’t hair just hair?

As a child I was transfixed to the television screen, watching Billie Jean battle injustice. Once Billie Jean buzzed off her long blond head of hair, and raised her voice in rebellion, “Fair is fair”, was my childish heart filled, or better yet, inspired by her feminine rebelliousness! She was beautiful, but beautiful on her own terms! Let’s face it, Helen Slater’s buzz cut rocked!

Today, Rhianna has become the face of fierce fashion choices, and female empowerment, sporting a short hair do (many times buzzed) while rockin’ fingerless gloves ala Billie Jean Davy! I too, have gone back to wearing my hair in a short, stylish bowl! I look at my short hair not as a symbol of rebellion, but more of a personal fashion choice! I am not trying to tell the world that I don’t care what they think or that I don’t want to conform…well, I don’t want to conform! I want my sense of style to be as individual and as exciting as Billie Jean was for me and my five year old sensibilities! I want to define myself, and not be defined by society! When I put it that way, then maybe I am giving conformity the middle finger, but it is a chic, well-polished middle finger!
